You have been hearing about it. The noise is getting louder. Yet you still don’t think you need to use this tool. Yet the demographic that is set to outspend the Baby boomers is using this tool. The Millennials are almost exclusively using this tool.

How would you like to get their attention about your brand? How would you like it if they were interacting with your brand? Conversing with you and becoming advocates for you. Now this isn’t easy, but it is possible. To do so,  you are going to have to venture into a strange world. You will have to use a tool that is confusing and will make you feel like your grandmother with a VCR. This tool is Snapchat.

Breathe! Breathe! OK, now that the panic attack has subsided. I know it is a foreign concept but relax you don’t have to show skin to be on this network. If you look like me it may help but only because of the train wreck effect. It is nowhere as bad as you think in fact if you play with Snapchat for a little while you might even get around to liking it. There is a reason it is taking over the social media world FAST!? Snapchat is where all the hip kids are.

So what is Snapchat?

You might have been so busy with your business. So busy that you haven’t had time to see what all the other people are doing in the world of social media. This could actually be your first time to hear the word Snapchat. So what is it?

Snapchat is an App that is on iOS and Android Powered devices. This app allows for you to send pictures, videos, and text to other people. And with the recent Chat 2.0 update, you can also video chat with other people. There is a Story section. This allows for you to post pictures and up to 10-second videos for other people to see for 24 hours. After the 24 hour mark, that story is gone from the Snapchat servers never to be seen from again.

The Next thing you will notice is the controls and interface. The app itself is ugly. And not intuitive at all. As the app has matured it has become easier to navigate around the app but it still isn’t that easy. Why? Because millennials swipe everything these days. Whether it is a liking someone on a dating app or triaging your email Swiping left, right, up or down. The navigation for Snapchat is the same. Swipe around the interface and you will get it figured out. Swipe over to the right side of your phone and you will see your conversations. Swipe to the left and you will see your stories and the Stories of the people you are following. Swipe down to add a new friend or change your settings.

Let’s dive into the most asked question about Snapchat. Why would I want to put so much effort into content that would not able to seen again? There are a few advantages to this believe it or not. The biggest is it encourages people to view your content. If they are going to watch your content then they will watch it, more than likely all the way through.

Disappearing content has been used for a long time. Look at radio. Once that content is aired it is never heard from in its originality ever again. So people are able to keep the important information.

Another question that is often brought up is I don’t have time to do video. Especially if it is never seen from again. First, I will let a little secret slip. You can keep your individual videos, or if desired, you can download your full Story. So the images and stories don’t fully disappear but they are not able to be seen from Snapchat.

You are able to upload your video to Facebook or YouTube, either way, your story can continue to live on.

The other part that is talked about is time. There are a few misconceptions about creating a story that is wrong. First is the time it takes to do video stories. This misconception is from misunderstanding how to use Snapchat. Many people want the highly produced cleaned up image to show off. You can’t really do that in Snap chat because you are not able to upload videos into your stories. Now you can use camera roll pictures and videos in individual chats. There is no uploading of highly produced vertical video. That is simply not allowed in the My Story.

So, the amount of time it takes to create a snap for your story is 30 seconds. The video can only be 10 seconds long. After choosing if you want a lens or filter applied to your video or picture. Posting it to My Story takes not time at all. Through the day if it is done regularly. You might be out of 30 minutes in a 24 hour period. That is nothing for the amount of interaction and viewing of your content.

So what type of content can you post that isn’t produced?

The best kind of content the type of content that will attract those young highly desired kids. The youth that are 15 to 35 years of age, otherwise known as Millennials. They are Almost exclusively chatting and video chatting through Snapchat. As us old fogies know the millennials are actually pretty darn smart in the ways of being sold to.  So you have to sell to them in a way that is going to give the internet marketeers a severe case of cramps. Because you don’t sell to them especially through Snapchat. Using Snapchat Stories gives the millennials a chance to get to know you and your company. It allows this skittish demographic to know, like, and trust you.

How are you supposed to be found on Snapchat?

This is a bit of a problem for Snapchat. There is no way to search for other users. I understand why. Snap chat does pride itself in privacy. But there are a few ways to share with people your username. One is Search by username. But you have to know the person username to add them.

The next way is by having Snapchat look at your contacts. You will be surprised as to how many people you now are on Snapchat.

The Next way is by snap Code If you swipe down you will see a square that has a ghost outline and your username. If you screenshot that image you can share it out with the rest of the world. If you see a snap code just point the Snapchat camera at that code and you will be able to add new people that fast. The last is interesting to do in a crowded room. Choosing add nearby you can add people if they have the Add Nearby open also. The best is the Snap codes. So keep an eye out for yellow boxes with ghost outline. That is the best and easiest way to add a person as a friend in Snapchat.

But we are a professional company.

All I will say to that is, Get over yourself! You are not that important to the world that you are not allowed to have a good time. Relax that dang tie and show people that you are human. millennials do not like big companies that act like big companies. Or did you forget what Occupy Wall Street? That was one of the clearer messages they were touting. So relax, show everybody that you are able to be related to. After all, that is what Social Media is about building Relationships.

So my challenge to you for this week is to download and install Snapchat. Spend 15 minutes acclimating yourself to this weird environment. Then walk around your company taking snaps then when the day is over Keep up the snaps. Show the world that you know how to be relatable. Find people who have their snap codes as their profile pictures and friend them. Start a conversation. Repeat that process and create a story each day for the next 7 days. Then come back here and tell me how it went.
